Government-Paid Maternity Leave (GPML)

Overview

Working mothers are entitled to 16 weeks of Government-paid Maternity Leave at the birth of their Singapore Citizen child.

For her first 2 childbirths, her employer will pay for 8 weeks of her maternity leave while the government pays the remaining 8 weeks. For her 3rd and subsequent childbirths, the government will pay for the full 16 weeks of maternity leave.

 

Benefits at a glance

  • For each of your first 2 childbirths, the government pays for the 9th – 16th week of your maternity leave, capped at $10,000 per 4 weeks or a total of $20,000 for each childbirth.
  • For each of your 3rd and subsequent childbirths, the government pays for 16 weeks of your maternity leave, capped at $10,000 per 4 weeks or a total of $40,000 for each childbirth.

  • For her first 2 childbirths, her employer will pay for 8 weeks of her maternity leave while the government pays the remaining 8 weeks.
  • For her 3rd and subsequent childbirths, the government will pay for the full 16 weeks of maternity leave.
  • Your paid maternity leave can be consumed within a period starting from 4 weeks before delivery till 12 months from your child's birth.
  • You must consume your first 8 weeks of maternity leave in a block (i.e. continuously). The last 8 weeks can be used flexibly over 12 months from your child's birth, upon mutual agreement with your employer.
  • Mothers who had stillbirths are also eligible for GPML if they meet the eligibility criteria.
  • You cannot use your maternity leave to offset the notice period when you leave your job.
